Defective Gear-Position Indicator Prompts Recall

Perceived problems with transmission shift lever, gear-position indicator lamps and backup lamps failing to illuminate has led to a national recall, according to several news agencies.

According to the information found in the news articles, over 10,000 units of Ford Expedition, F-150, Mustang and Navigator models of vehicles are being recalled by the carmakers Lincoln and Ford over fears certain mechanical issues could lead to accidents that would ultimately result in injuries.

The official recall announcement issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has revealed that the transmission may not go into “Reverse” at times or it may be shifted to reverse but the lamp in the gear-position indicator could fail to function properly and would rather indicate another gear position. This issue could leave the driver in a vulnerable position since the chosen gear might not be properly displayed.

At this moment, the company is notifying owners of these 2011 and 2012 model vehicles. All recalled cars are being repaired quickly and fully for free at authorized dealers.

As an Everett Personal Injury Lawyer, I sincerely hope that all recalled vehicles are fixed properly before any incident is reported and before anybody is injured in any way. I’ve seen many recalls like this in the past and I know that certain accidents caused by recalled vehicles can have dire consequences. Injuries in Single Vehicle Crash Along Highway 149 in Chico

A single vehicle crash Wednesday night sent a passenger to the hospital.

The incident took place at around 9:20 at night in the city of Chico.  A Honda Accord was traveling along the northbound side of Highway 149.  When the vehicle approached the area west of Highway 70, it reportedly began to drift off of the highway.  Exactly what caused the crash was not immediately known, but no matter what caused it, the result was that the vehicle flipped over.  The California Highway Patrol is investigating exactly what happened.

A passenger who was sitting in the backseat incurred what was being described as a severe head laceration that emergency officials stated was a crushing injury.  The individual had to be taken to nearby Enloe Medical Center via helicopter to receive treatment for those injuries.

Another passenger that was in the back also sustained injuries, but they were minor and the person was not immediately taken to the hospital.  A passenger in the front seat was uninjured, and there was no word on the condition of the driver of the vehicle.  All those involved were apparently wearing seat belts at the time of the collision.

Time and time again, I see as a San Jose car accident lawyer how devastating single car accidents can be.  Drivers need to be careful, even at those times when they’re the only persons on the road.  I hope as a personal injury attorney in San Jose that no one underestimates how dangerous roads can be.

Saskatchewan driver ticketed for using GPS device

A law intended to discourage motorists from practicing distracted driving habits has resulted in a man being fined more than $250 for using a global positioning system unit while behind the wheel in Saskatchewan, Canada, even though the law states an exemption for GPS devices. The law enforcement officer who issued the citation testified that he saw the man’s car weaving in and out of a lane of traffic. The officer’s vehicle was equipped with a video camera capturing footage of the car drifting between lanes for more than a city block. An oncoming motorist is forced to swerve out of the way of the man’s vehicle. According to the judge rendering the verdict in this case, the footage captures the man ticketed for distracted driving paying more attention to a small glowing screen on an electronic handheld device than he is to the road ahead of him. The law specifically makes an exemption for drivers using GPS systems, but, the judge pointed out when delivering the guilty verdict, only when the GPS system is securely mounted on the vehicle’s dashboard.

As a San Francisco car accident lawyer, I have seen the damage that can be caused by drivers who fail to pay attention to the road ahead of them. If you have been injured in an automobile accident linked to inattentive driving, please consider contacting a personal injury attorney in San Francisco

Helmets Recalled, NHTSA Urges Riders To Be Alert

According to several news outlets covering recall news, an undisclosed number of helmets are being recalled over possible injury hazards.

The official recall announcement issued by the Consumer Reports website has revealed that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has decided to issue this recall as a precautionary action since the defective helmet model could pose a serious injury risk to riders in the possible event of an accident. According to the federal agency, units of GLX 501C motorcycle helmets were found to be too big, which goes against the government impact standards.

Two-wheeled riders should keep it in mind that having an adequate helmet on could lower the risks of injuries. Riders are urged to only purchase helmets that are fully approved by the Department and Transportation. Although the company is yet to release a date for the repair process so the recall campaign can begin, riders are urged to stop using these recalled helmets immediately until further notice.

Any issues or concerns related to this recall should be addressed to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or Galaxy Helmets, the company responsible for the manufacturing of the recalled helmets.

It’s my sincere hope as a Vancouver personal injury lawyer that this recall alert is issued quickly and before anybody gets severely injured. I’m glad the federal agency that overlooks the safety of motorcyclists has issued this recall promptly. I sincerely hope that companies will have a more proactive approach to manufacturing issues in the future so recall alerts can be issued faster and incidents can be avoided.

Keep it in mind that if you or a loved one is injured though the use or consumption of a recalled product, please consider consulting with a Vancouver Motorcycle Accident Lawyer near you to learn more about the possible legal options applicable to your case.

Hyundai Uses 40 Wild Baboons to Test New Vehicle

Could this be the newest way to ensure product safety?

In setting out to test their New Generation i30 in order to make sure that the vehicle was sufficiently childproof, Hyundai let 40 baboons loose on the hatchback.  They accomplished this feat by placing the new model into an enclosure with the apes for over ten hours.  The test took place at the Knowsley Safari Park in Merseyside, Britain.

The trial was ostensibly designed to test such childproof features as durable cup holders, buttons, and seats.  The new vehicle, which is geared toward families that have young children, also includes easy-wipe plastics within the interior of the vehicle.

The auto manufacturer seems to be happy with the results.  At the end of the test, the vehicle seemed to be in relatively decent shape, despite a few scrapes and smears.  Throughout testing, the baboons reportedly chomped down on the steering wheel, had lunch in the backseat of the automobile, clawed at the paint, and jumped up and down on the seats.

1,000 pounds, the equivalent of $1,600, was donated to Great Britain’s Primate Society as thanks to the primates for their help with the product testing.

I found this interesting as a personal injury lawyer in Fresno.  Although this was likely no more than a publicity stunt, it shows the unorthodox lengths some auto manufacturers will go to test their vehicles.  I just hope as a Fresno car accident lawyer that the car is truly safe.

Reverse Gear Defect Prompts Recall of Multiple Ford Models

The Ford Motor Company has initiated a recall on F-150 vehicles of model years 2011 and 2012, Mustangs of the model years 2012 and 2013, and Expeditions and Lincoln Navigators of the 2012 model year.  10,500 vehicles in total are affected by the recall.

The reason for the recall is that Ford did not comply with the mandates set forth by Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards 102 and 108.  The former concerns transmission shift lever sequence, starter interlock, and transmission braking effect, while the latter governs lamps, reflective devices and associated equipment. Specifically, the vehicles are at risk of having a transmission range sensor not calibrated so as to function properly when the vehicle is thrown into reverse.

This condition can cause the vehicle to a) not to go into reverse at all, b)  not activate the backup lamp on all vehicles, or c) make it so the “R” is not properly lit on the dashboard of all of the vehicles except the Mustang.  These defects puts pedestrians in danger because such persons will be unable to tell if a vehicle is reversing course.  A crash hazard also presents itself.

Ford is set to begin the recall at some point after June 25.  Owners can expect to receive some sort of notification, at which point they’ll be able to bring their vehicles in to an authorized dealer for free repairs.  This will consist of a replacement of the transmission range sensor.

I hope as an Oakland car accident lawyer that this issue can be taken care of before someone gets hurt.  With 10,500 affected units out there, though, I worry as a personal injury attorney in Oakland that not everyone will get the recall information in time.
